Ecosave LLC Celebrates World Geothermal Energy Day at largest Geothermal Installation in New York City

Celebrating Geothermal in New York City, Coney Island

Geothermal technology was not in the original plans for LCOR, a Berwyn, Pa., multifamily developer, when it acquired a 1.5-acre parking lot through a 99-year ground lease in 2019. But it became a viable option as the developer sought ways to make the two-tower complex sustainable for the long haul, says Anthony Tortora, senior vice president of the firm, which is majority-owned by the California State Teachers’ Retirement System.

“We spent the better part of a year and a half investigating the constraints and challenges,” he says. “That this site was so large and was close to the ocean presented itself as a unique candidate for geothermal.”

Geothermal systems enable buildings to limit use of carbon-emitting HVAC equipment, such as natural gas-fired boilers, by providing heating and cooling as well as energy to run heat pumps. Wells deep under-ground use the earth’s ambient temperature to warm or chill liquids. That heat energy then transfers throughout the structure via pumps and pipes, which also redirect waste heat as an additional energy source. “This will be the largest geothermal project in the city by a factor of two.

Executing construction—and siting wells every 20 ft across the foundation’s footprint—required field adjustments along the way, says Raymond Johnson, executive vice president of engineering and construction at Ecosave, LLC, an energy efficiency consultant on the geothermal system design. Test borings helped the team determine not only the ground’s thermal properties but also the soil’s structural stability, he says. “The soil wasn’t consistent throughout the site,” he says. “We went through a learning curve to determine the most advantageous way of drilling.”  The project team threaded 153 geothermal wells into the site footprint in between 621 foundation piles that support the sprawling structure.

Newcrest Mining Celebrates World Geothermal Energy Day at Lahir gold mine, Papua New Guinea

Celebrating Geothermal in Papua New Guinea

Newcrest Mining Ltd celebrates its geothermal professionals all over the world.

Newcrest is the largest gold producer listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and one of the world's largest gold mining companies and is proud of its Lahir Island mine which utilizes geothermal energy in its environmentally friendly processes.

Lihir Island is located on a geothermally active extinct volcanic crater.

Most of the ore that Lihir produces is refractory and treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process.

Lihir achieved the target of an annualised 15mtpa sustainable mill throughput rate in the June 2019 quarter. Having achieved this target, Lihir is looking to stabilize throughput at or slightly above these levels and increase focus on lifting recovery rates to maximize overall gold production and cash flow in the future using its abundant and clean geothermal resource.

Energy Machines Celebrates World Geothermal Energy Day at Norrlands University Hospital, Sweden

Celebrating Geothermal in Sweden

Energy Machines celebrates with their client, Norrlands University Hospital

Celebrating the geothermal energy solution that frees up resources for healthcare at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS), Umeå, Sweden. The hospital’s optimized heating and cooling centre includes ground storage for energy and is one of the solutions behind the property’s energy  savings. “It‘s not only an effort to reduce the hospital’s energy costs, but also an investment in the environment” – Hans Johansson, then Property Area Manager at NUS.

The County Council Executive Committee invested in Energy Machines to safeguard the future energy supply at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS) in Umeå, Sweden. Their focus on geothermal and renewable energy was a step toward sustainable development for the future. Energy Machines designed and installed an integrated heating and cooling system along with a large borehole energy storage area. Today, our geothermal energy solution covers just over 20% of the total heat requirement and 95% of cooling.

The ground storage comprises 125 boreholes, 200 meters deep beneath the large car park at the County Council building. It is one of the world’s 30 largest installations, supplying some 5,000 MWh of cooling and 7,000 MWh of heating – enough to heat around 450 houses. These figures translate to NUS having doubled its capacity for producing cooling and heating. The City Council plans to further invest in optimizing cooling and heating installations.

MTN ENERJI, Turkey, Celebrates World Geothermal Energy Day

Celebrate Geothermal in Turkey

MTN Enerji

 Yakuplu District

Beysan Industrial Site

Beylikdüzü, Istanbul, Turkey

Here at MTN Enerji A.S. we have seen Turkey’s first zero carbon emission geothermal power plant (Babadere GEPP, 7MWh) through some exciting times, from drilling the first wells, to flow testing with downhole pumps, to constructing and commissioning of the the ORC unit, and finally to commercial operation of the plant. We utilize the hot geothermal brine under pressure throughout the entire system, therefore emitting no carbon to the atmosphere while maintaining the original chemical composition of the brine within the reservoir. This assures the sustainability of the geothermal system we are exploiting for as long as possible, perhaps forever.

EcoSmart Celebrates World Geothermal Energy Day and Austin, Texas Geo Installation

Largest-ever geothermal grid under this Texas housing development is saving homeowners serious money

  • The master-planned Whisper Valley community near Austin, Texas, is built atop an enormous geothermal grid.
  • Geothermal heating and cooling is achieved by accessing the constant temperatures deep underground and then using water to circulate that temperature up above.
  • It will eventually power every one of the 7,500 homes planned for the development over the next decade.

From above, the 2,000-acre new housing development just outside Austin, Texas, looks much like any other. Each home has solar panels, but that's no longer uncommon. But the Whisper Valley community is entirely unique thanks to what lies below. Far below.

The master-planned community, which will eventually include multifamily units and garden apartments in addition to single-family homes, is built atop an enormous geothermal grid. It's the largest ever created for a residential community – essentially a blueprint for greener living. It is also saving its residents thousands of dollars in energy bills.

USA Homeowners Celebrate World Geothermal Energy Day with Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)

A National USA Celebration thanks to IRA Passage

Details Brought to you by Dandelion Energy

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 Just Made Geothermal Heating and Cooling More Affordable Than Ever for Americans

After a tumultuous year of heat waves and sky-high energy costs, homeowners finally have something to celebrate. On Aug 16, 2022, USA President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law, including a historic $369 billion in new climate spending, the country’s largest and most significant investment in green energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

Most notably, the law will help decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 which will dramatically improve air quality and health outcomes for Americans. For homeowners, it extends the Energy Investment Tax Credit for clean energy home improvements, providing a 30 percent credit for geothermal heat pump projects installed before January 1, 2033. This credit falls to 26 percent in 2033 and 22 percent in 2034. In addition, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provides state energy offices with $8.8 billion to distribute to homeowners retrofitting their homes with energy performance improvements like heat pump heating and cooling.

Even before soaring energy prices made home heating and cooling exorbitantly expensive, it frequently consumed more than one-third of a family’s monthly utility bill. With prices expected to increase by another 30 percent this year, there is an added urgency and incentive to retrofit homes with more efficient and effective solutions that are budget and environmentally friendly. This is especially true for homes reliant on heating oil or propane deliveries as these expensive, dirty, and consumable fuels erode air quality, require regular maintenance, and must be restocked routinely.  In contrast, geothermal systems harness the earth’s constant temperature to provide warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer. It’s a clean, efficient, and affordable home heating and cooling solution, and it’s already made a proven impact for thousands of homeowners.
